Chicago Community Feature: Near North Side

 In Latest News

As one of 77 official Chicago communities, the term Near North Side refers to the entire area just north of downtown Chicago.  Its designation encompasses several popular neighborhoods, including Old Town, River North, and perhaps most favorable of all, The Gold Coast.  The boundaries of the Near North Side place this highly sought after neighborhood off the lakefront and northwest along the north branch of the Chicago River.

Near North Side is a fashionable, walkable community that has attracted an eclectic group of urban living enthusiasts.  And, with so many beautiful homes and buildings, surrounded by the world-class dining, shopping and entertainment found in The Gold Coast, it’s easy to see why so many Chicagoans are flocking to this area.

Here’s a look at just some of the wonderful features the Near North Side has to offer:

Shopping

The Gold Coast neighborhood is known as Chicago’s premier shopping district.  In addition to big names like Macy’s, H&M, and Anthropologie, shoppers will find all kinds of unique boutique stores.  Among both residents of the Near North Side and visitors alike, favorites include Independence and Ikarm, which has most notably become infamous for being where Michelle Obama’s fashion advisor started her career.  If you’re looking for more comforting, home-centered staples, other favorites include Tea Gschwender, a German tea shop, and Pratesi Linens. The shopping district is also home to a number of excellent art galleries where collectors can go to find one-of-a-kind pieces to personalize their homes.

Dining

If you’re looking for dining options, there are so many delicious places to choose from, your taste buds will never be without!  Some area breakfast and lunch favorites include Bistrot Zinc for a great salad or sandwich, Goddess and Grocer for their sweet treats and brunch options, and 3 Arts Club Café for their relaxing ambiance and delicious food.  If you’re looking for a night of dining out, you can’t go wrong with a burger or sandwich from Doc B’s Fresh Kitchen, or grab some southern-style comfort food at Chicago Q. And, if you’re looking for some authentic Italian food, Mario’s Table is a local favorite.

Museums

For those looking to immerse themselves in history and culture, there are three excellent museums in the Gold Coast.  Fans of modern art will fall in love with the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago. For those seeking knowledge, The Newberry is an independent research library that houses a non-circulating collection of books, music, manuscripts, maps and other great works from the last six centuries.  And, if architecture and design are more your thing, you won’t want to miss the tours of the Charnley-Persky House Museum. Enthusiasts will recognize the design of this building, constructed in 1892, as it is one of the famous works by Louis Sullivan’s junior draftsman, Frank Lloyd Wright.

Entertainment

From piano bars to dance clubs, there’s plenty of entertainment and nightlife in the area as well for those seeking a low-key night out or a roaring adventure!  For a journey back in time, the recently restored Sparrow bar emulates the atmosphere of a 1930’s hotel lobby bar perfect for a solo drink or a chill meetup with friends.  Then there’s the local favorite, the Zebra Lounge. This piano bar has been serving happy patrons since 1929, attracting crooners of all ages with its live music and classic drinks.  Another local favorite is The Pump Room. Celebrities have been known to frequent this bar, from the likes of Frank Sinatra back in the day to Mick Jagger.

If after you grab a few drinks with friends you’re ready to hit the dance floor, check out Primary Nightclub.  Known for its impressive wall of LED lights and massive dance floor, you won’t want to miss this one! Then, if you really want to make the night something special, head to 360 Chicago.  From the 94th-floor observation deck of the John Hancock Building, 1000 feet above the famous Magnificent Mile, you’ll have stunning 360 views of the Chicago skyline and Lake Michigan.
